Answer

GUANO

Guano refers to the accumulated excrement of seabirds, bats, or seals. The word comes from Spanish, which borrowed it from the Quechua word wanu. In the 19th century, guano was so valuable as a fertilizer that it sparked international conflicts, including the Chincha Islands War.

Strategy Tip

Today's word has three vowels, which is more than average. When you are stuck, try words with multiple vowels to quickly identify the vowel pattern. Words ending in O are less common in English, so keep that possibility in mind.
